Under Health Canada’s federal medical marijuana program (the ACMPR), patients are required to consult with their doctor and receive a note (similar to a prescription) before they can legally register with a licensed producer and order medical marijuana. As such, physicians are often called the ‘gatekeepers’ of access to medical marijuana in Canada.

Health Canada does not list specific conditions that patients need to have in order to be prescribed medical marijuana for. The power to determine if medical marijuana may help with a patient’s medical condition falls completely to the physician.
